5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your AC

1. Your Air Conditioner is Over 10-12 Years Old
This is the most straightforward factor. The average lifespan of a central air conditioner in a moderate climate is 15 years. In a harsh desert climate like Las Vegas, where AC units run under extreme stress for months on end, that lifespan is often closer to 10-12 years. If your system is in or beyond this age range, it’s living on borrowed time. Even if it’s still running, it’s operating with outdated, inefficient technology, and major component failure is becoming more likely.
2. You’re Facing Frequent and Costly Repairs
Does it feel like you have your HVAC technician on speed dial every summer? A single breakdown doesn’t necessarily mean your system is finished. But if you find yourself calling for service every year, or if you’re now facing a major repair (like a compressor replacement) that costs a significant fraction of a new unit’s price, it’s time to stop throwing good money after bad. A good rule of thumb is that if a repair costs 50% or more of the value of a new system, replacement is almost always the more financially sound long-term decision.
3. Your Energy Bills Are Skyrocketing
Your monthly utility bill is a direct reflection of your AC’s efficiency. Just like plumbing systems and their components, as an air conditioner ages, its components wear down, and it has to run longer and work harder to produce the same amount of cooling. This leads to a gradual but significant increase in your energy consumption. If you’ve noticed your summer electric bills getting higher every year, even though your habits haven’t changed, it’s a clear sign your old unit is losing its efficiency. A new, high-efficiency system can often lead to dramatic savings on your monthly bills.
4. Your System Uses R-22 Refrigerant
If your air conditioner was manufactured before 2010, it likely uses a refrigerant called R-22 (often known by the brand name Freon). As part of an international agreement to protect the ozone layer, the production and import of R-22 have been completely phased out in the United States as of 2020. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has overseen this phaseout. This means that the remaining supply of R-22 is extremely limited and incredibly expensive. If your older system develops a refrigerant leak, the cost to recharge it can be prohibitively high, making a full replacement a much more logical option.
5. Your Home Isn’t Comfortable
Is your AC struggling to keep up on the hottest days? Do you have some rooms that are cool while others are warm and stuffy? Does your home feel humid and clammy even when the AC is running? These are all signs that your aging system is no longer able to effectively cool and dehumidify your home. A new, properly sized system can restore even, comfortable temperatures throughout your entire house.
